Sports Medicine is one of many types of treatment that a physical therapist provides. Not just aimed at returning and maintaining a patient's functional independence, but specifically geared toward skilled diagnostics and rehabilitation of a sport injury and followed by preparation and maintenance of specialized athletic performance.
This training may include:
- Exercise prescription for necessary strength and flexibility,
- Cues to improve sport-specific performance mechanics,
- Education for athlete and coach on pain management and injury prevention, and
- In coordination with physicians, determining when an athlete is ready to return to physical and sport activities.
